Re: Taos Ski Valley/Wheeler Peak Region

photo 1_sm.jpg Several good early season storms have unleashed one of the brightest winter starts in the past 20 years. Waking up to more than 40cm of fresh pow on top of an already dense existing base is making for ethereal early season backcountry conditions below treeline. Taos.jpg It was surpri...

Re: "How To" pit videos

I realize that the other videos are "groovy", but this is likely a better explanation on "how to" and the thought process behind it.

Re: Taos Ski Valley/Wheeler Peak Region

Posted somewhere …and passed along to me…: "The Dangers of Early Snow With the first snows falling in the mountains near Taos a word of caution is advised. After seven months of summer, pristine white powder can be irresistible. Remember that a coverage of the rocky slopes around Taos require m...

Taos_Williams Lake ... go time.

Spring conditions on 15 March, 2012. The best of NM today included bullet blue skies, no wind, and vistas all the way back to the Sandias. Oh ya, a bier at the Bavarian at the end of the day ! The best snow was on the NE Face of Lake Fork Peak where skiing from the summit was still permissible. Calm...

Re: Bariloche beta?

Well, we didn't get to go to Bariloche since the volcano was spewing ash all over the slopes. But we did go to Chile !

Re: Taos/Lake Fork area BC over president day weekend....

Here's a pit profile that was done at the lower peace sign chute in the William's Creek Area near TSV. A small squall came through on Sunday, the 22nd of 2011 and produced some significant wind loaded slabs on E through NE faces. I saw two natural slabs occur above treeline with at least a 1m crown ...

Re: Suggestions for snow reports

There definitely needs to be a standard. I think this is a good minimum for a thorough report. Folks should refer to the SWAG guidelines when giving a report so that everyone can be on the same page. You can download a free version from the American Avalanche Association: http://www.americanavalanch...

Skirted across the Peace Sign and Middle Finger Chutes and dug this pit in the Ring Finger Chute.

Taos, Wheeler Peak / Peace Sign Chutes Area

Had a great day sniffing out the whopti-pies ! Some rocky sections for sure, but the goods are at and below treeline in this area. Venturing up higher will only result in a lot of cussing and extraneous amounts of base welding. A report is good, a photo is worth a 1000 words, but a video... http://v...

Tracker 2 Review

The long awaited Tracker 2 beacons from BCA are out. I have 5 left if anyone is interested. They are a no-frills, but very fast processing, avalanche beacon. If you have a really old F1 of M2, it's time to upgrade, get out of the stone age, and be a responsible ski partner. Marc Beverly Beverly Moun...
