Re: Taos Region

Lake Fork Talus area to Wildy Bowl 26022020 After seeing the conditions on Wheeler (above post) we were interested in evaluating conditions across the valley to the west in the Lake Fork Basin and Wildy Bowl At Tree Line and Below Tree Line. No new avalanche activity in the Williams Lake area over t...

Re: Taos Region

210220 Trip up Wheeler Peak and a couple of photos with a brief summary. Snowpack: At and below tree line areas have sufficient snow coverage for travel pretty much anywhere, but varies in some locations with over 180cm to others with less than 1m in the Williams area. DH runs around 20cm from the g...

It's worth it for sure. I've been in there a couple of times and it's a smorgasbord of fun.

Re: Taos Region

Regarding Marc's findings, that same problematic layer was reactive last week on Wednesday at approx. 11,600', west aspect by the treeline on the south side of the Red Rocks area. At the time it was the previous storm's slab failing on a layer of 2+mm graupel. Funny how that graupel has been a pers...

Re: Taos Region

After spending that past week in the backcountry in Taos during a really fun Level 1 AIARE avalanche class, the latest storm cycle delivered a nice fresh blanket of snow across the region. Our avalanche hazard is clearly different than that of the Sangre de Cristos of Colorado. The avalanche problem...

Re: Taos Region

Really great conditions today. Lots of folks out and about enjoying the dense snowpack in the William's Drainage area. Decided to follow the heinous uptrack set to Ring Finger and check out stability inside the trees since we spend a fair amount of time in there and there's almost 1m of snow on the ...

Re: TSV NOW WANTS EXCLUSIVE USE OF THE PUBLIC PARKING LOTS

Perhaps there needs to be some leadership to have a discussion with the USFS? It may be that simple, it may not be, but it appears clear that this may be a real issue and if unchecked, could go a bit further. I definitely would want to be able to continue to use the parking access on public lands, a...

Re: Taos Region

That tour shouldn't be much of an issue, Brock. There's usually someone on the trail walking their dog, snowshoeing, or skiing/boarding these days. With the good base it should be a nice outing.

Re: Taos Region

Comparing to previous years, these last couple of cycles have produced more SWE in a single event than any recent storm events, one on top of another. The spatial variability that was distributed in the initial snow falls that was producing advanced facets may see a slowing in the process, but it do...

Re: Taos Region

Checking out the Lower North Face slide from Sin Nombre, we wanted to see how far the actual run out went. Still slightly inside the alpha angle at 18-20 degrees, and 0.6 miles from the crown, this is a good example of how far the debris traveled. The run out went the full distance (R4+D3) across th...

A large majority of the above slides have recently filled in with with the recent storm cycles with near critical SWE snow. This is one of the better links to use for monitoring SWE: https://wcc.sc.egov.usda.gov/reportGenerator/view/customChartReport/daily/1168:NM:SNTL%7Cid=%22%22%7Cname/CurrentWY,Cu...

Re: BMG Avi courses for 2018-19 New AIARE Curriculum

Really good courses this year! Thanks to those who supported BMG this year.
We hope that the information and techniques taught with the new AIARE Curriculum will serve our students well.
Ski & ride safe in the b/c!
