Re: Taos Region

Psyched to see the TAC starting to post an avalanche bulletin and hazard this year. Hopefully, they can continue this through the winter and in seasons to come. It's really hard to start an avalanche center, especially with little to no funding. Sometimes this is a USFS position, but with funding so...

Re: BMG Avalanche Courses 2020-2021

Looks like we may be adding a course either between Christmas and New Years, or right after New Years. Contact me if interested.

BMG Avalanche Courses 2020-2021

COURSES Our courses cater to the individual learning process with a low student to instructor ratio. Don’t wait until the snow is already deep to take an avalanche course. We've beefed up our concentration of courses this year as well! Being able to use your knowledge and skills after a course is be...

Not sure why they were out, but glad they're safe. Good job to the SAR folks, looks like easy pickings.

Re: Taos Region

Saw that TAC is closed down for the season. I know there's a gang load of people in the backcountry still. I'm not judging, I respect everyone's choice to do whatever they want, that's why we live in the USA. Regardless, please ski or ride more cautiously if you are out there as a rescue could be an...

Re: Taos Region

Hey @Marc, Any idea what is going on with the land east of TSV? My OnX app has property ownsership turned on, but no ownership is indicated there. Is this NFS land that is erroneously unmarked, or is it private with ownership info lacking? I ask partly because some trails, e.g. the Wheeler Peak tra...

Re: Taos Region

Perhaps another point is that you might take a look at the land that TSV is permitting from the USFS. They actually have no right to prohibit the general public from going uphill on USFS lands. If you purchase a ticket, then you're not the general public anymore, you're a customer of a permitted ent...

Re: Taos Region

BOTW area: Zero avalanche activity in this area. Overall, the snowpack stability was Very Good...perhaps Excellent, although the ski conditions were a bit variable, depending on aspect and elevation. Warm temps being a bit of a concern as we are seeing minimum temps in the midpack at only near -4. O...

Re: Taos Region

Decided to check out the conditions at Gold Hill and Long Canyon. Old avalanche activity that was clearly from the previous wind loading event cycle. No rollerballs today in this region. No avalanche activity all day long...anywhere. No whumpfing, collapsing, cracking, etc... Snowpack is getting lot...

Re: BMG Avalanche courses 2019-2020

Bull of the Woods Hut-based course is SOLD OUT! We have one course remaining for the season, 20-22 March. I suspect it may be spring skiing conditions by then with the warm temps, which will make for great layering within the snowpack to evaluate! If we don't see you this round, we'll have more cour...

Re: Taos Region

We had the fortunate opportunity to experience both sides of the Williams basin in the same day. Our groups saw a variety of conditions today. Red Rocks pits showed no major test results, along with fairly hard supportive slabs and lots of creamy recycled snow. In our upper pit, we did a multitude o...

Re: Taos Region

Weather is definitely changing and a warming trend is coming in with temps that appear to approach 50F at 10,000' later in the week. A small squall will move through, but who knows if it will just be "dust on crust" or blow by and keep moving to Kansas with the winds. Some recent point rel...
